Community borehole project

Access to clean and reliable water remains one of the greatest challenges faced by our community. For many families, the daily reality involves walking long distances to collect water that is often brackish, unsafe, and a root cause of persistent health issues. Recognizing the urgency of this problem, Fundação Nuarro committed itself to finding practical solutions that improve health, dignity, and quality of life.

Bringing Water Closer to Home

​

In partnership with local leaders and community members, Fundação Nuarro installed a new borehole pump in Nanatha. This project was carried out with the full participation of the community—from identifying the ideal location, to assisting with logistics, to ensuring that the water point is accessible to everyone.

 

While the water remains slightly saline due to the nature of the underground aquifer, community members have already reported that this borehole is noticeably less salty than others in surrounding areas. This improvement makes a significant difference for drinking, cooking, and everyday household needs.

A Foundation for Health and Resilience

Water is at the core of community well-being. With the installation of this borehole pump, families now spend less time walking long distances, children have more time for school, and households can manage daily tasks with greater ease. Most importantly, safer water reduces exposure to waterborne diseases, supporting long-term health for the entire community.

Sustainable Community Management

To ensure sustainability, a committee of trusted community members—including women, youth, and local leaders—was formed to oversee the management of the borehole. Fundação Nuarro continues to provide guidance and technical support, helping to build local capacity in maintaining the pump and protecting the surrounding area.

This borehole installation is part of our broader commitment to improving water security in the region. Fundação Nuarro is actively exploring simple, low-tech desalinisation and purification options that could further enhance the quality of water available to the community.
